On Ventilator, Recovering From Pneumonia. Sitting In Chair Strengthen The Lungs?

An 83 year old man is currently on a ventilator. The machine is set at 4 and he is breathing above that level; however, when they used the c-pap machine he had to be put back on the ventilator after one hour. Is this typical? Do you think sitting him up in a chair would help strengthen the lungs. He is recovering from pneumonia as a result of taking risperdal for 5 months. I hope you can help.

If he has not tolerated the CPAP that means either his breathing rate was low or his amount of air in breathing wasnt adequate.
Nothing will help him in this if he is not maintaining his ventilation by adequate rate but as far as amount of air goes it can be changed by the settings of CPAP.
SO just hold on till he recovers more and is able to maintain adequate breathing
