On Remeron For Tremors. Suggestions For Antidepressant Along With Remeron?

Mom takes Remeron for tremors. She is also very depressed. While Remeron is used to treat depression, I'm not sure she's taking the appropriate dosage for depression versus the dosage given her for the tremors. Apparantly she cannot take any other SSRI's or MAOI's in combination with Remeron. What are her options to treat the severe depression while managing the tremors? Are there any other types of drugs that can be used to treat the tremors so she can begin an anti-depressant that will help treat her severe depression. Or, will increasing the dose of Remeron help/hurt the depression. She is irritable, wild mood swings, confused at times, memory issues, lack of balance. But her tremors are under control while on the Remeron. Help!

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

Remeron (Mirtazapine) is primarily an antidepressant medication which has also been found to be useful in treating certain types of tremors like essential tremors. You've asked a question whether the dosage she is taking is appropriate for her tremors / depression, but unfortunately, you have not mentioned what dosage she is taking. There is no standard recommended dosage for tremors, but in persons with tremors (and no depressive symptoms), generally, a lower dose is used compared to persons with tremors and depressive symptoms.

There are other medicines to treat tremors, but the treatment will depend on the type of tremors (there are many varieties due to many causes). Increasing the dose of Remeron is unlikely to worsen her depression, but rather could be beneficial.

However treatment decisions can be taken only by her doctor who has been seeing her regularly, since it is not possible to give you any recommendations without having a clear picture about her condition.

Wish you all the best.
