Nose bleeds from left nostril, no mucus, blood drainage into throat. Treatment?

Ive been having nose bleeds in the left nostril . they are becoming more frequent 2 to 4 times a week. I can feel the blood draining behind the left nostril into my throat like a river. I can taste it during the nose bleed. 6 hours after my nose bleed stopped today I feel the same draining sensation behind my left nostril with no blood taste. It hasn t stopped since. A very odd feeling. I don t have mucus that I can see or cough up. I don t have a cold or runny nose.

Hi Kittykelly,
Thanks for writing your query.

Nasal bleeding, called Epistaxis, can be due to number of causes. Common ones are :-
1. Nasal trauma.
2. High blood pressure.
3. Coagulopathies.
4. Foreign body.
5. Inflammation of the nasal mucosa.
6. Hot enviornment.
7. Intake of Aspirin.
8. Alcohol.
9. Protein supplements containing arsenic.
10. Vitamin C and Vitamin K deficiency.
11. Tumors.

You should contact your ER for first aid treatment and get yourself examined clinically by an ENT specialist to determine the cause of your epistaxis.

Apply pressur locally to stop the bleeding. You can use ice packs also for that purpose.
There can be need of nasal packing with application of vasoconstrictor locally.
This should be done under medical supervision only.

Also follow some precautions like :-
1. Avoid nose blowing with pressure.
2. Donot use manipulation by your finger.
3. Avoid hot and spicy foods.
4. Avoid hot showers.
5. Avoid aspirin and other pain killers.

I hope this is helpful to you.

General & Family Physician Dr. Veera Raghava Rao Buddha.'s  Response
Hi welcome to Health care magic forum. Nose bleeding is called epistaxis, it could be anterior or posterior. Your bleeding is likely to be posterior bleeding from the middle turbinate of the nose or from the posterior upper part of the nose, and it is a bit difficult to manage as it require posterior packing of the nose, and is extensive in nature.
The cause could be hypertension, ulcer in the posterior part of the nose, usage of drugs like asprin, or warfarin etc.
As you have described it must have been infected by now, and needs an immediate treatment, as it can become extensive as infection increases.
I advise you to consult an E.N.T.surgeon immediately, to find out the source of the bleeding and for treatment, by omision or commision.
Wishing for a quick recovery and thanks for calling.
