Newborn Having Ecoli In Eye. Yellow Greenish Liquid Leaking In The Eye. Cause, Affect Eye Sight?

A doctor has told us that our newborn has ecoli in her left eye. They have tried two different antibiotics and none of them seem to work. Now the are running test on the yellow, greenish discharge that has been leaking from that eye. I m not satisfied with their diagnosis. Is there any information to help us better understand how she may have gotten this and will this affect her eye sight. She is 1 week old.

dear rockrena, Hi, Your child is sufferring from neonatal conjunctivitis also known as ophthalmia neonatorum which is contracted by the new born after the vaginal delivery of the child. The baby's eye is contaminated with organism present in the vaginal passage at the time of delivery. Mostly they are infected with Nisseria and chlamydia. All babies are given 0.5% Erythromycin ointment with in 1 hrs of delivery to prevent this. Some times opportunistic organism like staph, strepto ,e coli etc also flare up if they are not sensitive to the antibiotic. The best thing now is to do a swab test where the correct organism is detected along with the culture and sensitivity to the antibiotic.Till then erythromycin oint/ fusidic acid ointment can be applied to the baby and wait for the result.Clean the eye of the baby regularly witha clean cotton dip in sterile water whenever the crust or discharge is present. Don't worry she ll be fine .......TC Dr Ajay Shankar Kar
