Hello dear,
Thank you for writing.
There are some advices that I give to my patients, in case of excessive flatulence:
1. A rich source of intestinal gas comes from swallowing air while eating. Therefore please try to eat slowly with your mouth closed, making sure that you chew your food well. Avoid speaking during your meals, as much as you can.
2. Avoid intake of carbonated beverages (cola, soda, beer etc.) which are full of gas.
3. Avoid foods that are known to produce gas like: beans, broccoli and cauliflower, cabbage, onions, processed foods, especially processed sugars.
4. Engage in a moderate physical activity that suits you best.
4. If you are already taking fiber supplement for your IBS, I would suggest to take polycarbophil compounds (like:FiberCon, Citrucel) rather than
psyllium (like:
Metamucil). Consult with your pharmacist for the options available in your area.
5.If the flatulence still persists and is not improving you might try using carbon-fixing drugs like
simeticone compounds (ie.
Maalox II) or bismuth compounds (ie. Bismatrol).
In case your complaint persists after applying the above measures, I suggest you
consult a gastroenterologist to start a medication regime.
I hope this helped.
Best wishes,
Dr. Alma
