Need Medicine For Cough.

Hi, my 2 years old daughter is now taking Ambroxol syrup for 6 days now as prescribed by her pedia. Thing is, when she started taking it, her cough is not as worse as today! Should I continue giving her Ambroxol or stop it and give her a different cough syrup?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello!
I had gone through your query and understand your concern.
Ambroxol is a secretolytic agent used in the treatment of respiratory diseases associated with viscid or excessive mucus.
The breakdown of acid mucopolysaccharide fibers makes the sputum thinner and less viscous and therefore more easily removed by coughing.
For this reason her cough seems like is worse but in fact coughing is a defensive reflex that doesn't allow harmful agents to go down in lungs.Since Ambroxol makes the sputum thinner it's more easy to be removed and this cause cough.

Even it may seems like the cough is getting worse I recommend you to continue this medication as long your daughter's pediatrician has prescribed it.

Wish your daughter quick and complete recovery.
Take care.
