My husband stoped breathing due to Alzheimer

my husband stoped breathing and had to be put on a breathing tube. What could be a cause for this, he had no trauma My husband has Alzheimer s and waS found slouched on his bed leaning to his left. hE THEN STOPPED BREATHING, WHAT ARE POSSIBLE CAUSES

When there is decrease consciousness, person not able to protect his airways. It means the secretions in lungs will accumulate causing infection. Also the there is decreases respiratory muscle effort. That is why he on Mechanical Ventilation.once he gains consciousness and chest x ray is normal they will take out the tube.
