Mucus In Back Of Throat. Reason?

I have mucus in the back of my throat? I don t know the proper name but googled it before and it said it was food particles that clog up and form a ball. It is way back there I guess behind the tonsils. If it stays there it can cause bad breath. What is it and why does it happen? Do I need my tonsils removed? How can i prevent it from happening?

Hi,
From history it appears that you might be having pharyngitis or follicular tonsillitis.
Food particles usually do not struck in the throat in this way.
Consult ENT surgeon and get examined.
If there is active infection or pus is lodged in follicle of tonsils, one antibiotic medicine course will cure your problem.
Do salt water gargling after taking any thing by mouth.
Ok and take care.

ENT Specialist Dr. Vaishali Mehta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us. Let me explain to you that mucus in your throat is not food particles, rather it is mucus from your sinuses. Normally your sinuses are well ventilated, but anything interfering with their ventilation and drainage can cause an infection called Sinusitis, due to stasis of secretions in the sinus.

You do not need to remove your tonsils. I advise you to visit an ENT Specialist who will advise you on further CT scan/ Endoscopy and further management based on the findings. Hope I have answered your questions.

Kind Regards,
Dr Vaishali Mehta
