Mother Fell From Stairs But Does Not Complain Of Any Pain. Symptoms Of Internal Injury?

Hello, My mother had a fall down some stairs yesterday evening, she did not loose consciousness but she did have a knock to her head, although no cuts or bleeding on her head or elsewhere. Throughout the rest of the evening she felt ok, no headache/feeling of dizziness and she could not feel any bumps on her head. This moring, she said she felt ok, was not sore anywhere and still had no headache or dizziness. Although she said she is fine and is not in any pain, should we be concerned at all about internal bleeding or whould she have felt the effect of that before now? If she did have any injury to the head, skull/brain would she have felt pain straight after the fall? Thank you. Beverley

Hello
Thanks for writing to HCM

Your mother needs non contrast CT Scan of brain as she is old age and chances of damage is more in old age.
Chances of subdural hemorrhage is more in old age and it needs to be excluded.
Other findings may be parenchymal contusion, extra dural hemorrhage or bone injury.
It may or may not be associated with external signs of injury and headache.
Get well soon.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The most feared complication of even a minor head injury in ELDERLY person is an INTRACRANIAL HEMATOMA which could be Epidural, subdural or Intra parenchymal ( within the brain substance ).

The symptoms may not appear immediately in all cases. They may present within a day of injury or may appear as late as 2-3 weeks.

The common presenting symptoms are - increasing headache, vomitings, drowsiness, confusion, weakness in limbs on one side of body, progressive loss of consciousness etc.

If your mother experiences any of the above symptoms, you have to act swiftly and should consult a neurosurgeon for further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
