Missed Period. Had Intercourse. Taken Unwanted 72. What Is The Reason?

Hello Madam/Sir,

I am 30 yrs & my wife is 26 yrs. She had her menstruation on 2nd of June’13 (with a normal tenure 27-28 days & for 5 days). On 9th June, we had intercourse and though I am not sure yet my wife had taken ‘Unwanted 72’ pill after 6 hrs, After that she had her menstruation on 20th June for three days (in 19 days gap). We supposed that her next menstruation will be on 2nd of July’13 (as it was her normal date). But it was missed. We wait till 21 July’13. Till now her menstruation is not occurring. Now we can’t understand the reason.

1). We can’t understand, on 20thJune’13 when she had got her menstruation on 19 days gap, whether it is her menstruation or only bleeding as a side effect of taking the pill?
2). Should we wait for 2/3 days more?
3). Should we go for pregnancy test?
4). If it is, what is the convenient time for test?
5). If pregnant, is there any process to terminate this by taking medicine only?
6). If it is, between how many days, we can do it?
7). As we intercourse just after completion of her menstruation cycle, how far it is safe to not be pregnant?

Note: - On her menstruation, her physical condition is ok. There is no side effect like, abdomen pain or any thing.
(If you need any other information regarding the physical condition of my wife, plz tell me).

Hello
Thanks for writing to us.
Here are your answers -
1. It was mostly the side effect of taking the emergency contraceptive pill.
2. The emergency contraceptive generally prepones or postpones your normal periods by a week, or upto 10 days. You can wait for a week.
3. It is better to take a pregnancy test.
4. Early morning urine samples are the best.
5. Yes, medical abortion is possible, but it is to be conducted by a gynecologist.
6. Generally, upto 49 days, or 7 weeks of pregnancy.
7. Mostly just after menstruation, chances of pregnancy are quite remote.
Take care.

Hello Good Evening,

Answers of your questions are as follows respectively:

1). On 20th June, was her menstruation bleeding for 3 days and because of side effect of taking the pill.
Irregular menstrual cycle is known side effect of unwanted 72.

2). Yes wait for 2-3 days, period will come, it is menstrual irregularities, not a pregnancy, if you have not done sex again after 20th June.

3). If you have not done sex after 20th June then no need for urine pregnancy test, period will come.

4). Wait for next 5-7 days.

5). If pregnant, then terminate only under supervision of your GP.

6). Wait for next 5-7 days.

7). Just after completion of her menstrual cycle, there are very few chances to get pregnant and taken unwanted 72 also and even after that she got period, so nil chances of pregnancy.

So be relaxed and understand that after sex if period come then nil chances of pregnancy and menstrual irregularities are known side effect of post sex contraceptives.

Regards,

Dr. Naresh Jain

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Q,
1 The bleeding was dysfunctional uterine bleeding , cause is not known until complete history. It was not due to pill.

2. Wait for at least 7 days after period date.
3 You could do home pregnancy test , but in my opinion it will be negative as contact ( sex) date is not for pregnancy.
4 Seven days after Ist date of missed period.
5 Yes pregnancy can be terminated with drugs ,if less then one month ( safe).
6 one month
7 As ovulation occurs 10 -20 days ( any day between these days).
before and after this you can do safely .
Hope you understand every thing.
GOOD LUCK.
Dr. HET
