Metacarpophalangeal (MP) Joint Swollen, Itchy And Stiff After Sustaining An Injury. Is This Serious?

Hi, my thumb was injured one month ago. There was a hyperextension of the thumb away from the palm of my hand. Originally, there was muscle hemorrhage in the palm of my hand, but has since subsided. Since then, the joint of my thumb, Metacarpophalangeal (MP) Joint, has still hurt a little bit and has a little bit of inflammation. 2 days ago, I went out into the cold and my hands were exposed to 15F weather and they really hurt from the cold. Since then, the MP joint has felt odd and really stiff, and a but more swollen and itchy. What is going on? Is this serious and should I see a orthopedic surgeon? I do not want to end up with arthritis in it someday, as I will need my hands for my work (currently 29 y/o f).

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello

First I will advise to do x ray and rule out any unicortical fracture in your finger.
According to your history it looks that there is possibility of injury to ligament of metacarpal or phalange joint.
If you are having swelling and pain you can strap your finger to get proper rest to joint. And apply crepe bandage for support and compression.

Use ice packs to reduce swelling, inflammation and pain.
Physiotherapy with ultrasound and Tens will help you,

If there is no relief them you may need to do MRI.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care
