Menstrual Pain, Vomiting Sensation. Why Does Period Pain Last So Long?

I'm on my period and it started yesterday, around 4pm I got period pain and hadn't any pain relief in hand and at 6pm it was really bad, I was past the stage of taking anything because I felt as though I were going to be sick. When I finally got home I lay in bed till 10pm and then had to get pain relief, however at 2am my period pain started again and until I fell asleep around 4am. So my question is why does period pain last so long and why does mine hurt so much, that I feel like throwing up?
