Lump In The Tonsils. Pain On Touching, Need Treatment?

I had some tonsil stones last week that came out on their own, but I still felt like there was one left in my throat because I had a "frog in my throat" feeling on the right side of my throat. That feeling has lasted for a week and today I was fed up and took a QTip to try and force it out. But when I checked my tonsils I didn't see anything until I noticed a white oval shaped lump or cyst about 1cm to the left of my uvula. I never felt it, until I poked at it with the QTip and that made my ears and head hurt. I'm very concerned about this cyst because I have no idea how long it's been there....

Hi, thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

You are having tonsillar retention cyst. It is a mucous cyst, presents usually as a small round lump at the back of throat. It is soft and may be pink or yellow in colour. It is usually asymptomatic and that's why you have not felt it earlier.

This cyst develops due to obstruction of small mucous glands in tonsills. Persistant infection due to your tonsillitis has resulted in obstruction, trapping the mucous inside. In due course it has enlarged and has resulted in pain and difficulty in swallowing which you have felt as 'frog in throat'.

Peroral examination by an ENT specialist will confirm the diagnosis. Tonsillectomy along with the removal of the cyst are the best options for treatment.

I hope this is useful to you.
