Low Potassium, Sodium, Reduce Dose Of Venlafaxine. Experiencing Adverse Personality Traits. On Coumadin, Furosemide, Metoprolol. Suggestions?

My husband has been on 37.5 mg of venlafaxine HCL. He's had some problems with other prescriptions and ended up in the hospital with dangerously low potassium and sodium. they also lowered his venlafaxine to 2 mg. (gradually). He has been experiencing adverse personality traits with such a low dosage. They gave no reason. He is also on coumadin for blood clotting. He was also on 40 mg of furosemide, 100 mg levoxyl; 50 mg metoprolol ER, 5 mg of wafarin; 10 mg prednisone; 20 mg torsemide; 20 mg simvastatin; 2 mg tolterodine tartrate, and the venlafaxine. He is 75 years old and weighs 299 lbs and is 6 ft tall.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Dear Madam,

Thanks for posting your query on this website. I can fully appreciate your concern for your husband's problem.

To be brutally frank, I can't comprehend why an elderly patient has been put on such heavy doses of diuretics (40mg furosemide + 20mg toresamide)!!! These medicines in such high doses, were responsible for very low sodium and potassium levels!

Please bring this fact to the treating doctor's notice immediately. Elderly people have a poor compensatory mechanism. Ask your doctor to stop one of these medicines and also add potassium supplement.

I am confident that you will certainly benefit from the advice.

May I assure you that I am always available for your assistance and will try my best to cure your condition to the best of my experience and knowledge.

Please feel free to revert back to me in case of further clarifications, if any.

HAVE A NICE DAY AND A SPEEDY RECOVERY for your husband.

Fond Regards,

Dr.(Col) R Karanwal
