Leg Badly Bruised After Slipping. Bruised Area Warm, Pain In Ankle During Movement. Normal?

Hi Doc: Two weeks ago I slipped and hurt my leg against the bathtub door railing. It hurt and was bruised badly, but got better gradually (although far from healed). Now, two weeks later the bruise is still there (lighter colors) but has also moved down to my ankle, which I understand is normal. However, the pain at my ankle is excruciating to the touch including when walking and even with the slightest movement of my foot when I'm sitting. The entire bruised area (old and new) is still very warm, but the pain at my ankle is really bad. I didn't even hit my ankle when I slipped. Is this normal? Thank you.

Hi,
Thanks for writing to us,

It is possible that in the spur of the moment you hurt your ankle as well and had probably twisted it or exerted your entire body weight on it to balance yourself, possibly causing a tear in the ligament (fibrous bands joining various bones) or a sprain. In case of excruciating pain it is advisable to get an orthopedician to examine your leg and also may require an x ray to rule out any possible fractures.

Hope this helps,
Dr A Rao
