Large Bite On Back, Attacked The Muscles, Swelling. What Are Tunnels In Muscles?

My sis is in the hospital. Had a large bite on her back. swell up and was attacking to her muscle. Dr said she had to have surgery. Now she has an area 3 fingers wide open and draining on her back. They cultured it and don t have the results yet. They said there are tunnels in her muscles. we live in midwest. Any idea what could have caused this?
