Itchy Red Rashes Around The Ankle Due To Continuously Wearing Arizona Brace In Ankle. History Of Diabetes. Suggest

my husband is diabetic, although not insulin dependent. He has a permanently dislocated ankle (from time of Vietnam war) that he started wearing an Arizona brace for. The brace helped tremendously. He could walk without pain. However, he liked it so much that he wore it for 4-5 days and nights without taking it off. He developed what looked like a red rash around the ankle, and also deep cracks in his heel. He stopped wearing the brace to allow all this to heal. It has been about 5 days and the original red spots and cracks are nicely healing but there are new outbreaks of the red spots that look like they follow veins. He also says that they itch. Do you have any idea what this might be?

Hello,
Long standing diabetics are prone for various types of bacterial as well as fungal infections on the body and specially lower extremities because of reduced blood flow and and some element of sensory neuropathy.
You must consult a doctor and get prescribed proper anti biotics for local application as well as oral use.
Keep the area clean and keep blood sugar levels under tight control.
Hopefully you should be all right soon.
Failure to heal would raise suspicion of diabetic foot ulcer which would necessitate a specialist intervention.
Thanks
