I've had a itchy rash on my lower scalp for a few months, that has gotten worse and swollen glands behind my ears for the last month. They were tender and sore a few weeks ago, but are still noticabley large not tender any longer.I did have a fever on and off for a few days at that time they were tender. I thought maybe I was fightinh an infection. But this rash is starting to spread up my head.
Im not sure if I should make a doctors appointment with a dermatologist? I'm in very good health other then this.

Hi,

There can be multiple possibilities of itchy rash on my lower scalp. You have not mentioned your age, sex, occupation and any recent change in routine. After reading your query there are two possibilities can be made:

1. Recurrent Folliculitis: It is a Simple blockage and inflammation of the oil and hair root.

2. Seborrhea capitis: It may be due to over activity of oil gland. As this is painful so this possibility is less likely.

Both of these conditions if aggravated can cause lymph node swelling of neck area in extreme situations.

You can apply antibiotic cream such as fucidin or mupirocin and take pain killer tablet such as paracetamol or diclofenac. An oral antibiotic is must to be taken care of properly such as ciproflaxacin or cefadroxyl 500 mg twice daily for 5 days.

Do not try to pinch pop or even touch the area as it may lead to secondary infection and further aggravation and spread.

Take care.
