Is There Any Side Effects For Hypertension Medicines?

Hi, my name is Cristina, I just started taking Northindrone tablets 0.35 mg ( for birth control) and lisinopril /hydrochlorothiazide 10mg/12.5mg.( for hypertension ) about two weeks ago.Does the meds. for my high blood pressure cause side effects that are long term or are they temporary? I feel more tired during the day,leg cramps, 2 lb weight loss( without changing my eating habits) plus I feel pain on my left eye( red and a little swollen inside my lower eyelid). I have an appointment in two weeks from now.

All medicines may cause side effects, which can be different in different people. Sometimes they are short term, and you get used to them after a short time using the medicines regularly. In some cases, a side effect can be long term, and a different medicine is needed. Your eye pain does not sound like a typical side effect of either medicine, so I suspect this may be a separate problem. The other symptoms could be side effects which will PROBABLY resolve with continued treatment. The BP medicine you are on can cause changes in your potassium and sodium levels, which may also cause symptoms such as leg cramps. If that is the case, your medicine may need to be changed or supplements added. Mention these symptoms to your doctor and ask about a blood test for electrolytes to be sure that is not the problem. Hope this helps.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Noble Zachariah's  Response
Hello Cristina,

The blood pressure combination tablet contains a diuretic ( a medicine that makes you pass a lot of urine). This would reduce the water content of your body and reduce your weight. You may feel tired because the same drug may produce electrolyte imbalance. The swelling of eye may be an allergic response. Lisinopril may produce this. It sometimes produces a dry throaty cough in addition.
When you meet your doctor you could discuss these and he may change your medication if he agrees with my opinion.
I shall be happy to answer if you have any further query.
Take care
Dr. Noble Zachariah
