I have understood your situation.

Your rheumatologist was right in asking you to stop taking methotrexate(MTX)

First, there is a possibility of drug interaction between MTX and amoxycillin ( one of the constituents of augmentin) as amoxycillin will decrease the excretion of MTX and thus increase its blood level.

In this situation ,you should report to your general practitioner if you have fever, bleeding, sore throat, bruising or weakness.

Secondly, clavulanate the other constituent of augmentin may cause damage to the liver when used along with MTX.If you have jaundice ,rash ,abdominal pain, chills and vomiting be prompt in reporting to your GP and he will assess your liver enzymes to rule out any damage.

My advice to you is that if you experience any of these symptoms report to your physician and stop Methotrexate for the time being as you are on Augmentin.
