Is There Any Chance Of Pregnancy With One Ovary Only?

I am 38 years old and my wife is 34 years, married since April 2007(4 years). My wife had an ectopic pregnancy in 2008 September, her one tube got ruptured and was removed with laproscopy. She already had one ovary not working fine as she was operated cyst operation around 6-8 years back before marriage. Now one ovary on left and the tube on the right are working fine. Some doctors said it is difficult to have a baby natural way since it is a cross and we will have to go for IVF only. Some advised that it is always possible and we need not worry. We are following up with doctors in manipal hospital for three months, rather since jaunary 2011 since the time we came to bangalore. We are seriously planning for a child now. My wife is continuously under observation and taking necessary directions from the doctors at Manipal. She is been referred to by Dr. Hemanandini at Manipal. Doctors have asked to try in the most fertile period and we follow up for ultra sound almost daily during that period as directed. Can we hope for a positive result? What are the chances of having a baby? What are the precautions we need to take? Do we need take further consultation with the doctor? She has been taking lot of medicines and she is worried about her health too. We have been very worried and now feel very depressed too. One more thing i missed to mention she regularly gets pain during every cycle since her last laproscopy operation. She has a swollen stomach during this time. Kindly advise us. Thanks a lot..

OBGYN 's  Response
you will need to undergo in vitro fertilisation as the chances of natural conception are very less as the healthy ovary and fallopian tubes are contralateral side.
Whenever there is release of ovum by ovary during ovulation that ovum is picked up by fallopian tube of same side.
So transperitoneal migration of ovum is rare and it will lead to ectopic gestation.
Also as yours and your wife's age increases the chance of conception decreases and there are more chances of chromosomal anomalies
So its best to undergo in vitro fertilisation techniques.

OBGYN Dr. Viraj Ramesh Naik's  Response
Its difficult to conceive normally as your wife is having fallopian tube of one side which is functional and ovary of other side.
Hence it is preferable to undergo in vitro fertilisation.
In vitro fertilisation will also ensure that healthy sperm and healthy ovum are fertilised and decrease the chance of anomalies in the fetus.
