Hello,
The knee joint replecement is advised when the disc between the thigh and leg bones is so degenerated that the bones keep getting into friction with each other and day to day activities regarding knee joint becomes too painful and troublesome.
There is no alternate way that can regenerate the disc and make movements easier other than
knee replacement therapy. However, corticosteroid injections in the joint may give relief for up to a year. They are very expensive and the effect may wear off earlier than a year for some people. Also, as it suggests, it is a temporary solution for a year or a little longer. Supplemental
physiotherapy can also give temporary relief till the exercise is continued. Same is for pain killers.
Permanent solution is knee replacement therapy only. If she is
overweight, then losing some weight can help. After surgery, if proper physiotherapy and exercise is continued along with following doctor's all instructions, she can expect less complications and faster recovery. She can also wait for another knee till one knee feels good so there is no burden of two knees' recoveries.
I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. I wish your mother feels better soon.
Best regards,
Dr. Viraj Shah
