Is The Red Itchy Bumps On Burned Hand After Applying Silvadene Cream Due To Infection?

I burned my hand with boiling water 2 weeks ago. I have been applying silvadene cream 2 times a day and keeping it covered with a telfa dressing, wrap, and ace wrap. I am also taking antibiotics. Tonight when I took my dressing off, I have several red, itchy bumps. I am worried I may have an infection.

Hi,

I can understand your concern for red itchy bumps on burned hand after applying silvadene cream. It appears that the area got secondarily infected.

You should meet your treating doctor to get proper diagnosis. Do not try to even touch or pinch the area as can cause more aggravation of the problem and spread of the infection. This area is quite common to get infected very easily because of sweating and high bacterial proliferation.

If I were your treating doctor then have suggest you to take oral antibiotic such as ciprofloxacin or cefadroxyl 500 mg two times a day for 5 days to prevent secondary infection. For time being period you can apply antibiotic cream such as fucidin or mupirocin and take pain killer tablets such diclofenac or paracetamol.

Take care.
