Is The Low Blood Count Due To The Side Effect Of Valproate?

Dr., I ve question about my father. He aged 68 years. He has undergone brain surgery after met with accident. He has been taking valproate cr500 medication for almost 10 years after surgery. In recent times, he is becoming calm and inactive. His feet are swollen. His blood counts are lowerside. Is this side affects of medication ? Or, aging. Do we need to consult hematologist or any other specialist based on stated problems? Pls suggest.

Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern for the safety of Valproate.

The features described in your query are suggestive of the side effects caused by Valproate. Swollen feet are indicative of suspected liver problem due to valproate and the low blood count due to its toxic effect on the bone marrow.

Consult his treating neurologist for the use of an alternate but a safer medication to control the convulsions (fits).

Hope this information helps you to get him treated after consulting his doctor.
