Hello I am taking augnmentin for a sinus infection. I had a glass of wine aat about 4pm. I took my daily dose of augmentin at about 7 pm. when I went to check my blood pressure, my heart rate was 130 over 84 and heart rate was 106. I was told to take metoprolol when this happens. So I took this about a half houra go. I didnt realize that wine with antibiotics may cause an increased heart rate. Did I do something dangerous?

Hello, Thanks for your query. Not all antibiotics are the same. There are a few different classes and they have different mechanisms of action and different properties. Some classes of antibiotics cannot be taken with alcohol because it will make you very sick (by blocking breakdown of alcohol, causing some WICKED hangovers), and it will limit the efficacy of the drugs. Penicillin-class antibiotics don't usually have bad interactions with alcohol. However, cephalosporin-class antibiotics can make you sick if taken with alcohol. Same thing with metronidazole (Flagyl) What antibiotic are you taking? Your best bet is to ask your doctor whether the alcohol is safe with your durgs, but in general, NEVER drink alcohol if you're on medications. Alcohol tends to complicate a LOT of meds. I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
