Is Taking Mirtazapine 15mg Normal While On 50-100mg Of Trazodone?

My husband has been taking 200-250 mg of trazodone for quite some time, still wakes up at night. His doctor just said to take him off the trazodone and give 15mg mirtazapine instead. I am concerned about taking the trazodone away without tapering off. Is it better to give him the 15mg mirtazapine with 50 or 100mg trazodone instead? He takes Many different medications. I am just afraid of taking the trazodone away, worried about adverse effects of stopping it cold turkey

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Both trazodone and mirtazapine are anti-depressants. Mirtazapine has better safety profile than trazodone. There is no need to taper trazodone as your husband has been switched to mirtazapine which will work. As both are anti-depressants so there is no need to take both drugs simultaneously. Mirtazapine alone is sufficed. It will work.
Advice
1.     Continue mirtazapine as suggested
2.     Stop trazodone as suggested by your doctor
3.     Keep in touch with your doctor and follow his/her instructions strictly
4.     Do not change drug or dose of any medicine by yourself unless suggested by your doctor
5.     Ask your husband to start workout in gym at least for half an hour for 4 – 5 days in a week regularly. it will help in improving depression
6.     Avoid alcohol and smoking
7.     Practice meditation
