Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Magnesium citrate belongs to group of drugs known as saline laxatives. It works by pulling more water into the colon in order to help the colon empty its contents. It aids bowel motility, usually producing a bowel movement within 30 minutes to six hours.
Magnesium citrate is used as a laxative to treat occasional constipation. It is more often used to "clean out" or evacuate the colon before undergoing diagnostic procedures like a colonoscopy.
However, milder products like stool softeners or bulk-forming laxatives should be used whenever possible for constipation.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Magnesium citrate is used generally for cleaning or emptying the bowels before undergoing certain operative procedures on abdomen.
It is also sometimes used to treat constipation. It generally acts by 6 hours by evacuation of bowels. As it can cause some discomfort in the abdomen, it is not the first line choice to treat constipation.
It would be better to use bulk forming laxatives like Isapgol Husk Fibre to treat constipation, as they are more tolerable.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
