Is Swollen Neck And Jaws Normal For Mastoiditis?

I have mastoiditis and had a tube inserted in my left ear 2 weeks ago. Over the week-end, the glands in my neck and jaw (on both sides, not just the left) have swollen significantly. Is this normal for mastoiditis patients? Should I be concerned that this is a sign of something more serious?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. It is less likely that the infection of the mastoid bone spread to the neck and jaws. The swelling of the jaw and neck on both the sides seem unrelated to the mastoiditis itself.

However, it is a possibility that you are allergic to the medicines prescribed to you causing the swelling. In that case, taking antihistamines like Loratidine 10 mg once a day for 5 days will help to reduce the swelling.

If this medicine does not help, then it seems to be viral infection or infection of the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) that should be examined and confirmed by either an ENT specialist or an oral & maxillofacial surgeon.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMaic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
