Is Swallowing Mylanta And Benadryl Dangerous For Children?

My 13 month old has HFMD. I was told by the dr that we have to wait it out. Tonight he was beyond miserable due to his mouth sores. I have never heard him cry like this. In desperation I tried the magic mouthwash; mixing 1/2 tsp of mylanta and 1/2 tsp of children s Benadryl. In an attempt to get him to swish it around he swallowed it...is he going to be ok? Should I take him to urgent care? I am worried.

Thanks for posting your query at HealthCareMagic. Hand, foot and mouth disease is a a common and highly contagious viral infection caused by Coxsackievirus A16 or Enterovirus 71 (EV-71) and is characterised by painful mouth sores. So it is natural for your child to cry like hell.
There is no harm if the child swallows Mylanta and you need not worry about it. All that can happen is that the child may feel sleepy for sometime.

Currently, there is no specific curative treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease. Disease management typically focuses on achieving symptomatic relief. Pain from the sores may be eased with the use of analgesic medications. Infection is typically mild and lasts approximately 1 week, but may occasionally run a longer course. Fever reducers like paracetamol and lukewarm baths can help decrease body temperature. It is a self containing disease and corrects on its own but with time.

Hope that I have been able to clarify the matter. Feel free to revert back in case of further queries if any.
