Is Surgery Advisable For Insertion Of Stent Due To Allergy To Medications?

What would you advise a patient who is being told she needs a stent but has a lot of underlying issues? She is 85 years old , very frail, has COPD, a very bad hiatal hernia, a hump on her back, is on oxygen and is allergic to almost all medications. Is the surgery worth the risk? What can she take post operation if she can t take aspirin?

Hello, Thanks for using Healthcaremagic. I had gone through all the details that you have posted.
For your patient who is 85 yrd old COPD, ON oxygen and allergies what i suggest would be

If angiogram was done as a part of workup for acute myocardial infarction and showing stenosis or block in the corresponding ischemic territory, discuss with your treating doctor about life expectancy , Go ahead and put stent .

if angiogram was done in a senario without acute myocardial infarction, where incidentally stenosis was found in coronary arteries, go for medical management as there is no mortality benefit for stenting in stable coronary heart disease.

if she cant take aspirin she would be put on clopidogrel or prasugrel or ticagrelor or anticoagulation depending upon her status..

Hope this helps..
