Is Stronger Dosage Of Omeprazole Advisable For Persistent Cough And Sore Throat?

I have been diagnosed with LPR recently and was given omeprazole 40mg capsule to take once a day. My symptoms have improved over last month but cough, sore throat still evident. I have made dietary changes as well. Should the RX be stronger? Are there other medications more effective?

Hi & Welcome to HCM.

I appreciate your concern for the persistent cough and sore throat following Omeprazole therapy for Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR).

Usually given in the initial dose of Omeprazole 20 mg orally once a day before a meal for 4 to 8 weeks. This dosage may be increased to 40 mg per day if needed.
You may need a long-term treatment with doses of 10 to 20 mg per day for maintenance therapy of refractory disease and appears to be safe.

Besides, the possibility of complications like scarring throat and voice box, bronchitis, bronchial asthma should be investigated for and treated if found.
LPR can also increase the risk of cancer in the airways.

Certain lifestyle modifications are found to be beneficial in the prevention of LPR like:

Lose weight, if needed.
Quit smoking, if you are a smoker.
Avoid alcohol.
Restrict chocolate, mints, fats, citrus fruits, carbonated beverages, spicy or tomato-based products, red wine, and caffeine.
Stop eating at least 3 hours before going to bed.
Elevate the head of the bed about 4 to 6 inches.
Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes around the waist.

However, if the above measures continued to be ineffective or if symptoms recur, you may have to consult the doctor for possible surgical procedure.
Hope to have answered your query.
