Is Smoking Cigarettes Safe For A Person Suffering From Pneumothorax?

I had a stontaneous pneumothorax 8 days ago. Was in the hospital for 2 nights, with a chest tube, then realesed. I ve been a smoker (1 pack a day) for 4 years and it s been 8 days and I haven t smoked at all because I know it increases the risk of having a second pneumothorax , but I was wondering I have 1 cigarette today , and maybe once or twice a week. If that would higher the risk. I know it s bad no matter what but I have severe anxiety and smoking is the only thing that helps

Hello thank You for contacting HCM

I'd like know your age first of all. I also appreciate your concern and congratulation for being a Non-Smoker for 8 days

Secondly I need to tell you some thing regarding Pneumothorax--

Spontaneous Pneumothoraces are divided into two types:

Primary, which occurs in the absence of known lung disease, and Secondary, which occurs in someone with underlying lung disease. The cause of primary spontaneous pneumothorax is unknown, but established risk factors include Male sex, SMOKING, and a Family history of pneumothorax.

Secondary spontaneous
Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax occurs in the setting of a variety of lung diseases. The most common is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which accounts for approximately 70% of cases.

Once again most common cause as well as risk factor for COPD is also Cigarette Smoking while it takes years(~10yrs) to develop this condition and the most effective way to prevent it to happen is also Stop smoking!!!!

Now I can understand its really hard to control the urge to smoke but believe me its the only way to stop this.

Its all in the mind , if you can control it for 8 days, you can control it forever. I'm here to help you.

Just go ahead and get some nicotine chewing gums (its easily available over the counter) and since your facing anxiety you can also try Nicotine patch (remember its not a permanent solution which you can always try!!)
Its easy to use, all you have to do is read the instructions carefully before applying it, change it as advised in the manual(some of them are for 48hrs while some are for 72hrs) and make sure it gets stick to your skin properly and avoid applying any water to it, protect it from sunlight etc.

Once again smoking is not the thing at all under any circumstances, whenever you feel like smoking just put those nicotine gums and chew. Try
to keep yourself so busy that the thought of smoking won't even pop-up to head. Try listening to music, meditate, watch movies that way you can keep yourself busy in your spare time also

One more thing, try to avoid people while they're smoking otherwise it'll just worsen your situation.

Give it a while , I hope things will improve meanwhile just join those non-smoking social groups which are almost every corner of the world now. But if it doesn't improve your situation just contact a clinical Psychologist at the earliest

Once again congratulation for being a Non-Smoker for 8 days and Keep it up!!!! You Can do It!!

Hope this'll help you and thanks again for contacting HCM , will see you soon again
