Is Silver Sulfadiazine Cream Effective In Treating Mosquito Bite?

I had gotten a bite from either a mosquito or spider a few days ago. I scratched it a lot and it had gotten bigger and looks infected. I put hit compresses on it and it opened up a little and some pus came out. I am taking ciproflaxin. Can I also use silver sulfadiazine cream.

Hello user,
Welcome to HCM,
I read your concern.

Ciprofloxacin is the right medication to treat discharge of pus due to an infection by a bug bite or spider bite.

However, you can also use an anti- allergic tablet like Fexofenadine 120 to decrease the itching. This composition is free of sedation and hence can be used any time of the day.

You can safely apply a topical ointment like Soframycin 1percent (Framycetin sulphate) which is used for skin lesions.

As far as silver sulfadiazine is concerned, the composition is mainly used to prevent and treat infection of second and third degree burns and also kills bacteria therein. However, it has no anti-itching property and will provide no benefit as such. Moreover, it is a sulfa drug and is contraindicated in people who are allergic to sulfur.

So, if I would have been your treating physician, I would have advised you an antibiotic and an antiallergic .

Once healthy skin is retained, you can apply Cotrimoxazole powder to the affected area to provide a soothing effect.

Hope this helps,
