Is Sickle Cell Disease Hereditary?

Wondering if you can help or lead me in direction we are looking into adopting but worried about sickle cell. mom has sickle cell trait and is anemic, she has a sibling with sickle cell disease and nothing is known of the birth father. What are risks for newborn?

Hi, Thanks for asking. Sickle cell disease is a hereditary condition. It is inherited in a autosomal recessive way. Mother is having sickle cell trait. So she is carrier of the disease.
If the father is normal and not a carrier then there are 25% chances that the child will have sickle cell trait. No chances of sickle cell disease.
If the father is also having sickle cell trait then there are 25% chances that the child will have sickle disease and 50% chances that the child will have sickle cell trait.
If the father is having sickle cell disease then there are 50 chances that the child will have sickle cell disease and 50% chances that the child will have sickle cell trait.
