Is Random Blood Glucose Level Of 325 A Cause For Concern?

My son just called me about my nine year old grand-daughter. Since he and I are diabetic, he decided to take a random glucose reading on her - the result was 325. However this was about a half hour after she consumed several Jolly Ranchers and a milkshake. I told him to retake Miley s sugar in the morning before breakfast. My question to you is twofold: 1) Did I give the right advice? or 2) Should he take her to an emergency room? - Deanna, Concerned grand-parent YYYY@YYYY

The advice you have given is partly right. And no need to take to emergency room.
A random blood sugar above 300 looks little disturbing. But no need to rush your grand daughter to emergency as she is showing no symptoms at all according to your history. Emergency treatment is required if she has severe symptoms due to very high sugar such as vomiting, abdominal pain or altered consciousness which happens in a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis.
A proper fasting blood sugar and a post prandial blood sugar needs to be done and assessed preferably under a physicians guidance. Do get it done as soon as possible.
