Is Radioactive Iodine Treatment Safe To Cure Overactive Thyroid?

hi doctor
i was admitted to hospital 2 years ago with a goiter and irregular heartbeat of 187bpm and was told i have a overactive thyroid since then i have had 2 treatments of radio active iodine after the second treatment i still went slightly overactive and have been put on 10mg of carbimazole per day
now this 10mg is holding my levels perfect but as soon as i come off i go slightly over active , now my dilemma is do i go for another radioactive iodine or do i ask them to cut it out im scared that 3 shots of radiation aint doing my body any good but am also scared of the op
and until my thyroid is sorted they cant sort my irregular heartbeat out

Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
You are a established case of primary hyperthyroidism and you underwent two times Radioactive iodine for the same and presently on antithyroid medication... Radioactive iodine is 1st and best treatment modality presently but some times in few cases single dose does not help and we have to go for 2nd dose of radioactive iodine.. but in your case 2nd dose is also failed and you are on medication.. Actually, anti thyroid drug is indicated for 18 months to 24 months beyond this period anti thyroid drug is indicated as per guidelines.. But in few countries , Some doctors are using anti thyroid drug for longer periods...
in your case, i'll prefer surgery now.. because you already had two session of Radioactive iodine ablation but did not help you..
SO for you, Now best choice is surgery.. but its totally your doctor choice... still there is hope for both radioactive iodine and anti thyroid treatment..
Don't be scared for anything.. Start Beta blocker for your irregular heartbeat.. And Kindly Consult your endocrinologist for further management ....
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
