I have had a horrible outbreak of Guttate Psoriasis due to a strep throat infection. My dermatologist says it can months to get out of your system and only gave me a steroid cream. 8 mos later I still have this I was wondering if I can take a psoriasis pill for this type?

Hi dear,

Thanks for choosing HCM.

Guttate psoriasis first line treatment is steroid creams, however your doctor should have considered giving you antibiotic drug such as Erythromycin if strep throat infection was the cause to help eradicate the bacteria from your body.

Psoriasis drugs are used for advanced level or if more than 10 to 15% of the body is affected. Therefore, I suggest that you don't choose taking drugs until seen by a Doctor. The reason I say that is because these drugs reduce your immune system strength and this can have many bad side effects, these drugs are given only if Doctor sees that the risks outweigh the drugs side effects.

As for your case, I suggest you the following treatment options.

1.Corticosteroid cream combined with Vitamin D ointments have shown great efficacy results. You can consider mixing calcipotriene (vitamin D ointment) with Helobetasol cream twice daily (once at night and once in the evening. You can mix both creams on your palm and then apply it to the affect area. Please wash your hands well after applying, avoid touching your eyes or face while cream is on finger or hands.

2.You can also consider UVB photo therapy under Physician guidance and presence. Avoid tanning beds.

Exposure to sunlight shown good results to patients, because of the ultraviolet light received from sun as well. br>
if still no good results is seen and you can see that your outbreak in more than 10% of your body then Systemic treatment by taking drugs can be considered.

It's important that you visit your dermatologist and discuss these treatment options, it's best to be seen by a Doctor since every case is different. Only through physical examination and necessary tests is the best way to decide what's best for you.

I hope this helped.
