Hallow Dear,

If you have started having pain after 4 months of painless comfortable sexual experience, it indicates the possibility of some infection. Moreover, your perineal skin also has become rough which may be due to some skin infection.

If your pain is during insertion, it could be either due to reflex contraction of the vaginal muscles in apprehension. Usually, it does not happen so after 4 months of hassle-free sexual relations. The other possibility is infection of the external tissues near vaginal opening (Bartholin's Glands) or vaginal infection. Trichomonal, fungal or bacterial infections may cause vaginal discharge resulting into irritation and painful insertion.

If the pain is after the insertion and particularly located in the lower abdomen or flanks, it is due to the infection of the internal reproductory organs.

Since there is change in your sexual partners, the possibility of Sexually Transmitted Infections must be kept in mind. These infections if untreated may lead to serious complications like infertility, affection of vital organs, etc..

Please report to your Gynaecologist or STI specialist for clinching the diagnosis so that you can be treated appropriately.

I hope this helps you.

OBGYN Dr. Jacqueline Brown's  Response
Hello, and i hope I can help you today.

First of all, if you are in pain when you have sex, and if your skin has some changes that you cannot identify, you should stop having sex and not continue until you see a GYN doctor for evaluation.

There are quite a few possibilities of why your vagina may hurt. You may have a vaginal infection, like a yeast or bacterial infection, which can cause discomfort and usually a discharge or odor, or even an STD like herpes, which causes painful bumps and sores, or genital warts, which can also cause bumps that can feel rough to the touch.

Either way, it is not normal to have pain, especially if you did not have any problems before having sex. But a doctor, like an OBGYN, who is a specialist for women's problems, will need to examine you to make a proper diagnosis.

I hope i was able to answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
