Is Opening Of Narrowed Esophagus By Ballooning A Common Procedure?

A GI doctor is opening a narrowing in my esophagus by inflating my throat with a ballon connected to endoscopy scope. I had the procedure done 2 weeks ago & another in July is scheduled. I could not swallow certain medications. Also, I have had Crohn s for 30 years. Is this procedure common?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted your history of narrowing in esophagus for which balloon dilatation was done 2 weeks ago. IT is scheduled again.
Although not very commonly done this is not an uncommon procedure.
If is done at the GI centers routinely, is relatively safe as the pressure applied is not much.
There are esophageal dilators also available and are a bit stiff and have more chances or trauma and perforation as compared to balloon dilatation.
So go for it. Take multivitamin syrup as an anti-oxidants as it helps in better healing and less scarification requiring less of procedures.
Continue rest of the medicines as advised.
