Is Neuralgia Accompanied By Stabbing Pain In Head &face?

I have been suffering from stabbing pain in my head. I have had this kind of pain for 40 years on occassion. My mom also had it. She called it neuralgia and the doctors in Buffalo, NY seemed to agree with the same. Some times it would hit my face, eyes, teeth, but not always. This time it is at top of head, has lasted more than 3 weeks, and I truly, can t stand the pain. Do you think it is neuralgia?

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello dear,
I can understand your concern.'Neuralgia' is a term which is defined as pain along the distribution of a nerve.Though 'neuralgia' pain is a stabbing in character but it is not diffuse and in the territory of a particular nerve only. The areas where you are having pain(face, teeth, eye and head)are all supplied by the trigeminal nerve and it can be 'Trigeminal neuralgia' you are having. But something specific for trigeminal neuralgia is that it comes in short duration episodes(usually of seconds in duration) and associated with trigger factors(like pain on brushing or chewing). Please visit a neurologist,so that he can take a detailed history to establish your diagnosis.I hope it helps.
