hi i took the morning after pill (levonelle) last monday 28th June and yesterday started expereincing light bleeding, however as the day went on i started getting cramp too and I'am still bleeding and having cramp today but it is still no heavier. My period isnt even due yet as I only had it on the 19th June so was wondering if this is normal or if I should take a pregnancy test.

Hello, and i hope I can help you today.

One of the common side effects of the morning after pill is to have withdrawal bleeding from the medication 3-5 days after taking the pill. This actually is a sign that the medication worked, because it is essentially giving you a mini-period. Your actual real cycle may be delayed, because you already bled somewhat from the side effects of the pill. The morning after pill is 90 percent effective in preventing pregnancy when taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse.

So I recommended if your menstrual cycle is late, you should perform a pregnancy test. However, it is unlikely that you've conceived given that the uterus had bleeding after taking the morning after pill. Bleeding 3-5 days after taking the morning after pill is common and is not a sign of pregnancy.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that this information was reassuring.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
