Is Itching Related To Hemochromatosis

Is there a connection between hemachromatosis and itching. I have had this severe itching problem for about 20 years...from upper arms down to hands on the topside. I was diagnosed with hemachromatosis about 10 years ago. The itching has moved up my arms as the years go by and is almost unbearable at times. At times, the only relief is cold/ice packs. I have been to dermatolotists and have had ointments/creams prescribed that help very very little. The only suspected diagnosis I have been given is an allergic reaction to the sun. My arms stay red almost all the time in the area of itching even when it isn't itching. Tho...I can feel a stinging sensation almost all the time. The itching is not a normal itching...it is more a horrible stinging/itching sensation that can sometimes leave bumps and sores. I am desperate for relief!!!!

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. Hemochromatosis affecting the liver can cause itching.
2. Liver biopsy or biochemical investigation of bilirubin levels can be helpful.
3. For itching antihistamines can be taken. Avoid scratching, as it will start a cycle releasing chemicals at site of scratching and further increase itching.
4. Sun exposure is also known to increase itching secondary to dehydration. Apply good amount of moisturizers. Get the tests done for further evaluation.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
