I have a burn on my hand due to steam since last 1 month. it measuresaround an inch in diameter. I have been using Silverex ( silver nitrate gel 0.2% w/w). Pl suggest how manydays should i be applying and will it leave a mark. Also can i let water on it while bathing especially to clean the silverex gel that sticks to the wound?

Hi,

Thanks for posting to HCM.

Topical antimicrobial therapy is the single most important component of wound care when you have burns.

You can use among the following creams for its treatment:
1. Silver sulphadiazine - has an excellent spectrum of activity, low toxicity, and ease of application with minimal pain.
2. Cerium nitrate-Povidone iodine - enhanced clinical efficacy.
3. Silver nitrate solution 0.5 % - is a broad-spectrum agent, bacteriostatic at a concentration of 0.5%. It is effective in prophylactic use.
4. Nitrofurazone - is used topically as adjunctive therapy.
5. Chlorhexidine - 1 % chlorhexidine digluconate to 1 % silver sulphadiazine increases the agent's antibacterial effectiveness.

Hence, from the above treatment options available, you can choose to wash the burn site with chlorhexidine and then apply either Silver nitrate or Silver sulphadiazine on it until it dries completely.
Hope the information provided is clear.
All the best.
