Is It Safe To Take Metoprolol For A Long Time After Putting Stent?

I just had a silent heart attack and they had to put in a stint. One of the medications prescribed is metoprolol. I read that the dosage should be rduced over a period of 1 to 2 weeks but my script has me taking it for a much longer period of time, Is it safe to take it longer?
