Is It Safe To Take Norgestimate-eth Estradiol During Menstruation?

Hi, Im 44yrs old and started my first pack of Norgestimate-eth estradiol tab, 2 weeks ago and today my period has started and I'm not sure if I should stop taking the pills and restart after my period, like this sunday. I made a mistake in starting my first pill 4 days late, meaning after my last period, I was supposed to start them on Sunday but instead I started them on Thursday. I'm not sure if I continue taking the blue pills while I have my period. Can you please help direct me on this. thank you, Renee

Hello Renee
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Normally, you should not have a period while on the active pills.
This can be because you started the pill pack late.
ALso, it could be because you need a higher dose of the hormones.
This can be called breakthrough bleeding, because the dose of hormones would not be sufficient, and hence, you experienced bleeding mid cycle.
Right now, continue taking the pills without a break.
Once you finish the current pack, you should again have a withdrawal bleed.
Even if you dont, start the new pack without a break.
If you again experience a bleed mid cycle or bleeding that is erratic or unpredictable, then you should consult your healthcare provider to change the brand / up the dose.
Also, for the first pack of pill use, make sure you use a backup method like condoms.
All the best
Take care.
