Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my daughter is a special needs child (24 years old) has an allergy to biaxin and pediazole - she recently was treated for a plantars wart and the doctor prescribed clindamycin for her to prevent infection.....I am worried that she will have a reaction, but the doctor just told me to keep Benadryl handy.....I don t feel comfortable even going there if there is a possibility of reaction......am I wrong? YYYY@YYYY is my email
Clindamycin is a different antibiotic class from Biaxin and Pediazole (which is a combination of the antibiotics erythromycin and sulfa). Erythromycin and Biaxin are in the same antibiotic class, so it wouldn't be a good idea to mix them. Allergies in one class of drugs do not predict that allergies will happen with another class. Thus, there is no way to know if she will react to clindamycin if she's never had it before. So there is always the possibility she could be allergic to it. Since you are concerned about that possibility and the drug is not being prescribed for an active infection, it may not be absolutely necessary. Ask the doctor about that. I would consider prescribing it only if an active infection should occur. Hope this helps.
