Hello.
Thank You for the query at Healthcare Magic
Seroquel is a second generation/newer antiphyscotic. It is used in
dementia patients to control behavioral problems, agitation,
hallucinations, aggression etc.It also has a sedative effect which helps with sleeping.
Antipsychotics have a warning that it increases risk of death in elderly patients with dementia. However seroquel is safest among all antipsychotics in elderly with dementia.
Common side effects include sedation, headache, and orthostatic hypotension(decreased pressure/light headedness on standing up from lying down position) and
Cataract formation.Screening for cataract formation is recommended at the initiation of therapy and at six-month intervals thereafter.
It is recommended to start seroquel at dose of 12.5 mg daily and gradually titrating up to the desired dose .
Your doctor must have prescribed the medication because he/she decided that benefits from seroquel outweigh the risks.
Please follow up with your doctor to discuss his/her reasons for starting the medication and regarding dose titration .
Hope I was able to answer your question
Please feel free to address any more concerns
