Is It Normal To Have Extreme Fatigue, Shaky Legs And Cramping In Calves During First Trimester Of Pregnancy?

Hi, I am 39 and 8 weeks pregnant with my third child. This has been hands down the roughest pregnancy yet, with many days I feel so weak and shaky in the legs that I feel I must be vitamin deficient. Is this a normal symptom, does it mean anything, and how can I treat it? I am also already experiencing cramping in my calves. Thank you for your response!

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Weakness is common in any pregnancy, due to lots of reasons.
Also, during the third trimester, the uterus enlarges quite a lot , putting pressure on the veins of the legs particularly.
This leads to shakiness and weakness of the legs.
It is a normal symptom, but then it is also normal for pregnancy women to be deficient in calcium and vitamin D.
If you have taken these supplements during your pregnancy, do not worry.
If not, please get your calcium and vitamin D levels checked, and start the supplements accordingly, and continue till you breastfeed.
Also, vitamin B 12 deficiency predisposes particularly to pain in the calves and burning sensation in the soles of the feet.
Take B 12 injections, they will help.
Do not neglect the symptoms, and dont let your body get worn out.
All the best.
Take care.
