Is It Normal To Have Diarrhea After Having Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy?

I am 4 days out of surgery robotically assisted (DiVinchi) total laproscopic hysterectomy. I have not had a normal BM yet, only diarrhea. Is this common from the antibiotics given in the OR? I am eating a light diet of broth, rice and boiled chicken and yogert with my Vicodin pain meds and plenty of water. Do I need a probiotic? What am I doing right and what am I doing wrong. Please advise, thank you for you assistance.

Diarrhea after TLH is very unusual. Post operative diarrhea can be due to certain reasons. First reason can be antibiotic induced, for which you have to discontinue the antibiotics and starts probiotics. Second reason can be some accumulation of fluid in the pelvis which can be associated with diarrhea and fever and is confirmed by Usg abdomen. This diarrhea can not be relieved by probiotics. ea.Certain pain medications like Codeine when taken continuously causes constipation and if stopped immediately can cause diarrhea. So First of all if you are afebrile, stop antibiotics, start probiotics, take curd and banana. If your diarrhea does not respond, Get your abdominal usg done to rule out any intra abdominal collection, mainly in the pelvis. If there is collection, it can be easily drained by usg guided needle aspiration. Also ensure the food which you are eating is fresh or stale.
