Is It Normal To Gain Weight With Intake Of Reclipsen?

I have been on the birth control Reclipsen for about 8 weeks. I normally weigh in at 120 pounds at 5 5 , but I have noticed a ten pound weight gain since being on the pill. Is that normal? Is it mostly water weight? Is there anything I can do to control it? I work out 3-4 times a week and eat healthy for the most part. I am considering getting off the pill because of it or finding something else that won t cause a weight gain.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing to HCM.
Reclipsen (28) is a birth control pill which is composed of Ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel that exerts its function by preventing ovulation.
Common side effects associated with this drug include: nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps, breast tenderness or swelling, nipple discharge, freckles or darkening of facial skin, increased hair growth, loss of scalp hair, changes in weight or appetite, vaginal itching or discharge, changes in menstrual periods and decreased sex drive.
Weight changes which you are experiencing as increased weight gain is mainly due to water retention.
You can try and control your weight through diet and exercise. In case it is not happening and bothering you much, you need to take suggestions from the Gynecologist to go for alternative mode of contraceptive.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
